One Man’s Ultimate Protest Against Oppression

A young university graduate, Mohamed Bouazizi, set fire to himself in December in Sidi Bouzid, 125 miles southeast of Tunisia’s capital.

For the unemployed and oppressed people of Tunisia, a young man’s decision to set himself on fire in mid-December was a wake-up call, sparking days of protests and eventually the fall of the government.

‘I pray that the new authorities will make new fair policies — policies that my son inspired,’ Manoubia Bouazizi, Mr. Bouazizi’s mother, told the Associated Press.
